How to Check the Performance of Your PC and Speed It Up
If your computer is starting to experience problems, such as application freezing or major slowdowns, you can try using computer diagnostic software to troubleshoot. The following are some other things that you can try also.
Reboot
If your computer hasn’t been rebooted
recently, make sure that you reboot it before following any of the steps below. Rebooting
can often sort out many problems, and is an easy first step in the process.
Background programs
One of the most common
reasons that a computer is slow is programs that are running in the background. Remove or
disable any TSRs and startup programs that start automatically start every time your
computer boots up.
If you have an antivirus scanner, spyware protection program, or
another security software, make sure it’s not scanning your computer in the background.
Should a scan be in progress, it will reduce the performance of your computer. Should this
be the case, allow the scan to finish, and your computer’s performance should, in theory,
improve.
Delete temp files
As a computer runs programs,
temporary files will be stored on the hard drive. Deleting these will greatly help to
improve the performance of your computer.
Tip
To see what programs are running and how
much memory and CPU they use, open Task Manager. If you are running Windows 7or higher,
run Resmon, this will give you a better understanding of how the resources of your
computer are being used.
Windows computers
First, we recommend that you
use the Windows Disk Cleanup utility to remove any temporary files and other files that
you no longer need. Sadly, the Disk Cleanup may not delete every file, therefore, we
suggest deleting temporary files manually, it may be slow, but it is effective.
